Information on GMES
Global Monitoring for Environment and Security - in short GMES - is the European contribution to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) intitiative.
GMES is, besides the satellite navigation initiative Galileo, the second flaggship of the European Space Policy. Its' objective is to support European policies by providing satellite based information.
Observational Infrastructure of GMES consists of two main components:
1. Space infrastructure - the space component shall ensure sustainable provision of satellite derived Earth observation data to all GMES services. The architecture of the component is derived from service requirements provided by the user communities. ESA and EUMETSAT are two main European actors in this area who should play the major role in co-ordination, implementation and operational running of the infrastructure.
2. In-situ infrastructure - The in situ component is based on an observation infrastructure owned and operated by the large number of stakeholders coordinated, in some cases, in the frame of European or international networks. In situ observation activities and associated infrastructure derive from a range of national, EU and international regulatory requirements and agreements or form part of research processes. None was created to meet the needs of GMES, and they cover a much wider field than the GMES services. By this reason European Environmental Agency was appointed to co-ordinate the consolidation of in-situ networks for GMES purposes.
In the framework of GMES the following domains are addressed:
Land Environmental Services under Project geoland2
Marine Environmental Services under Project MyOcean
Support to Emergencies and Humanitarian Aid under Project SAFER
Atmospheric Environmental Services under Project MACC
Support to security-related activities under Project G-MOSAIC
The European Commission published short descriptions of the GMES projects from the 1st and 2nd Call in FP7. Below you will find the short descriptions for the 1st Call.
GMES fast track services:
geoland2 [2 MB] - a major step forward in GMES Land Services, informing decision makers about the current conditions of our natural environment and predictable trends.GMES fast track services
MyOcean [964 KB] aims at setting up infrastructures, and services in preparation for the GMES Marine Services, including information about the present and future impact of rising sea levels on coastal areas.
SAFER [2 MB] ’s main goal is to provide a rapid mapping capacity in response to disastrous events, at the service of European Civil Protection Authorities as well as humanitarian relief.
GMES pilot projects:
G-MOSAIC [2 MB] helps in supporting EU external relations policies.
MACC [963 KB] is designed to be the pilot project for the future GMES Atmospheric Service, combining computer model simulations with world-wide observations to monitor and forecast the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere and predict regional air quality.
Coordination and support actions:
The support action SWIFT [907 KB] helps raise awareness about GMES, promoting its results.
2nd Call: All projects within the GMES Area of the 2nd Call as listed below are described in one single brochure called Desire for Space [3 MB] PDF :
