Space research achievements under the 7th Framework Programme
The following introduction to the compilation of papers describes the objectives
and first results from projects selected under the first calls for proposals under
the FP7 Space Research Programme. It provides a short overview of EU funded
space research and the benefits for our society.
These papers illustrate how space technologies can improve our knowledge of the sustainability of our living conditions on earth. In addition, they highlight the contribution of space technologies to improving the competitiveness and innovative capacity of European industry.
SPACE RESEARCH – A European Journey
Space is one of the most stimulating areas of scientific research and technological development,
and full of endless possibilities. The 76 projects featured in the brochure take you on a journey
through the solar system.
Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) service activities progressively take shape,
facilitating enhanced monitoring of nature sites in Europe, developing new tools to monitor scarce
water resources in dry regions, assisting marine scientists to forecast harmful algal blooms along the
Atlantic coast, and monitoring the rain forests across the Earth’s tropical belt to combat deforestation.
The European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) have concluded an agreement on the delegation of budget implementation tasks to ESA for the GMES Space Component within the FP7 specific programme “Cooperation” and its theme “Space”. ITTs funded by the EC or co-funded by EC and ESA are open to all FP7 participating countries.
European Commision COSMOS is financed by the European Commision, DG Enterprise and Industry within the 7th EU Framework Programme
